Oregon’s Longview Ranch, Sticking True to Cowboy Heritage
Located along Central Oregon’s historic Route 19 in Kimberly, Longview Ranch maintains 30,000 stunning acres of diverse landscape.
Every winter, Longview Ranch welcomes up to 700 new calves. Come March, the calves are old enough to be branded. Longview Ranch brands up to 140 calves each day, meaning it takes about five days with good weather to finish the work. Similar to Longview Ranch’s approach to constructing a fence the old-fashioned way, the ranch prides itself on branding calves the tried-and-true and, ultimately, more humane way. This involves roping the calves and bringing them to the fire. Done right, it is proven that this is less stressful on the calves and Longview Ranch likes sticking to cowboy heritage.
The calves get the “LV” brand on their left hip and, once this is done, they are returned to their mother and turned out on the open range to spend the summer on Longview Ranch’s vast property, which also boasts three tributaries sharing annual steelhead runs, 25,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) grazing grounds and 485 acres of irrigated hay producing land.
